st Mary, stone

  • The chancel was created at the same time as Westminster Abbey and the workmen on the Abbey may well have been involved here as well.
  • Early Gothic nave. Piers have alternating shafts of plain stone and Purbeck marble.
  • Aisle windows become more ornate west to east
  • Panels made have come from Westminster Abbey

  • Heavily restored by Gilbert Scott in the 19th century but chancel was left largely untouched
  • The largest display of brasses in once place in England.
  • Tomb chest of 9th Lord Cobham d. 1561

st botolph, lullingstone

  • Elizabethan gatehouse
  • Exterior is restored Gothic with Decorated windows and an early 16th century side chapel. Th classical porch is 18th c.
  • The 14th c church was transformed by Sir John Peche in the early Tudor period. The rood screen was created at that time.
  • Unusual font in a cupboard from time of Queen Anne.
