new shoreham

  • St Mary New Shoreham begun c. 1130. Old nave was demolished in 17th leaving crossing and transepts of c. 1130 and the choir of c.1180.
  • North arcade piers are alternately round and octagonal in Norman style
  • South arcade is Early Gothic.

steyning

  • St Andrew, a Norman church with a 16th cent. tower.
  • The chancel arch of c. 1100 survives from the earlier crossing, more Saxon than Norman, its capitals with unusual Celtic from motifs.
  • A reredos of 48 carved panels, dated 1522 and taken from the old rectory. The coat of arms of Henry VIII is visible.

warminghurst

  • Holy Sepulchre. The exterior is an Early Gothic single-cell with a 'splay-foot' spikelet hung with tiles.
  • There is a Queen Anne screen dividing nave and chancel; the queen's coat of arms is painted with exaggerated panache.
  • 18th cent. pinewood pews fill the nave.
  • beneath the pulpit, the clerk's elmwood chair was tailor-made for a vast posterior. On the right is a lectern designed for a corner position

hardham

  • St Botolph Hardham
  • The church is filled with 12th century Cluniac wall paintings. Adam and Eve in Anglo-Norman style.
  • Eve milking a mythical cow.

  • West side of chancel arch shows an Annunciation
