Arthur ‘Bobby’ Ratcliffe-Ellis born Wigan 1872, died 1945. He was the son of Thomas Ratcliffe Ratcliffe-Ellis and Mary Dean 'Minnie' Barton.


He served in France in the 2nd/5 Bn Manchester Regiment and was promoted to major.


He is believed to have proposed to the actress Lily Brayton but then overnight they called off the engagement. He was educated at Rugby school from 1886-91 and then read law at Trinity College, Oxford. He adopted the name Ratcliffe-Ellis after his father did so on his knighthood.

 

A pair of brothers (Arhur and Henry) and a threesome (Roland, Stephen and William), all first cousins, joined 5th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment, the ‘Collier Battalion.’ Served in Gallipoli and Flanders. We have photos
